A Guide to 27 Weeks Pregnant – Symptoms and Tips

Having a baby grow within you is a wonderful experience and with every week of development, your body is continuing to change and you will also observe a variety of symptoms. Now that you have reached the 27th week of pregnancy, it is a great milestone attained by both you and baby. It indicates the last two weeks of the second trimester and the starting of the final phase of pregnancy. With the due dates nearing by, parents, grandparents and other members of the family become excited as there are only a few more months for the birth. But till then it is important to know the body changes at 27 weeks.

Your body changes at 27 weeks of pregnancy:

It is during this time that you will notice some new symptoms. You may develop some specific craving for food during this time and remember that you will need about 300 to 500 extra calories per day to provide sufficient nutrients to your baby and to remain healthy. The uterus will continue to grow and will start putting pressure on the upper chest area and this may result to chest pains and shortness of breath. This is the most common 27 weeks pregnancy symptoms and it is absolutely normal, but in case you are having too much breathing problems then talk to your doctor.

At 27 weeks pregnant, you will also experience lots of gassiness and this is caused by the loss of muscle control around the rectum because of the pressure of the growing baby. All you can do to reduce this is to avoid foods that cause gas. You will also experiment more frequent urination as the bladder gets constricted due to the growing baby. You may also experience restless leg syndrome, especially at bed time. This is often a very uncomfortable situation and can make it very difficult to sleep. Trying some relaxation techniques may help. During your 27 weeks of pregnancy, you may have swelling in the face, hands, neck, feet, ankles and anywhere else. Lots of rest and relaxing can help to cope up with these common pregnancy symptoms.

Your baby at 27 weeks

Your baby will now start to show brain activity and will continue to develop in complexity in the coming few weeks. The baby’s lungs are rapidly developing and will continue to develop till the end of the pregnancy. As the lungs develop, you may feel hiccups and this will help to mature the lungs as they inhale and exhale amniotic fluid. Your baby is now about 15 inches in length and is over two pounds in weight. The eyes are developing and the layers of the retina are also forming. Your baby will now develop walking and sleeping patterns and experts believe that they start to dream at this point.

Some tips for a healthy pregnancy:

During this time, you will be struggling to get enough rest as the growing baby will restrict you from easy movement. So try these tips to maintain good health

• Eat healthy foods

• Do light exercise and stretching

• Maintain a sleep schedule

• Avoid taking liquids especially in the evening
