Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men and How to Overcome It

Erectile Dysfunction may seem like an embarrassing problem, but if you suffer from erectile dysfunction, there is no reason to be embarrassed, no matter how young or old you are. Erectile dsfunction is quite common and statistics show that it affects approximately one out of every five men over the age of 20.

General Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

In broad terms, ED is due to either physical or psychological factors. In older men, the causes are almost always physical. The most common physical causes are nerve damage and reduced blood flow to the penis. However there may be many factors underlying these two causes. Reduced blood flow is suggestive of poor circulation and blocked arteries, and this can be the result of an unhealthy lifestyle. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are two of the main causes of erectile dysfunction in older men. Nerve damage is usually the result of trauma to the pelvic region, and often this is the result of surgery to the colon, prostate or bladder. There are also many prescription drugs (including antidepressants, heart medications and drugs for high blood pressure) that are known to cause impotency, as well as some over the counter medications.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men

In younger men, studies indicate that erectile dysfunction is more likely to be caused by psychological factors. If you are able to achieve an appreciation through self stimulation, or if you wake up with anection, then this indicates that the issue is not physiological, but psychological. The possible causes of psychologically based ED include stress, exhaustion, depression, relationship issues, guilt, low self-esteem and performance anxiety. And one episode of performance failure may indicate psychological stress that in turn compounds the problem.

Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men

Psychological ED: The good news is that if your erectile dysfunction is psychologically based, then the problem can be overcome through counseling. Qualified therapists can work with couples, or individuals, to improve communication, reduce tension, and to set realistic expectations.

Other ways to combat psychological causes such as stress, anxiety and depression are simply to get plenty of rest and plenty of exercise. Exercise is known to have a positive impact on depression, and it can help to release endorphins, which are the body's natural "feel good" chemicals.

Physiological ED: Where the cause is physiological, then the first step would be to consult a doctor or urologist. Various tests can be performed (such as cholesterol, hormone levels, blood sugar, liver and kidney function) to indicate whether any conditions are interfering with normal erectile function.

Treatment options for physical causes are varied, and include surgery, drugs, penile injections and vacuum pump devices. All of these treatments have risks, and are not guaranteed to be effective.

Lifestyle Changes

The best treatment is to focus on adopting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy erection depends on getting sufficient blood flowing to the penis, and to achieve this you need good circulation, and unclogged arteries. The most effective and long-lasting way to become healthy is through diet and exercise.

Diet: To reduce cholesterol, you need to have a diet that is high in lean protein and fiber, and low in bad cholesterol, or LDL. Your diet should include plenty of fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains. Also include foods that are high in good cholesterol (HDL), such as avocados, as this will help lower the bad cholesterol levels.

Exercise: Get plenty of cardiovascular exercise, to further reduce cholesterol, and boost circulation. Also do some training training, particularly of the large muscle groups, to increase human growth hormone and testosterone. Both of these hormones are necessary for strong erections and for a health sex drive. Lastly, do specific pelvic (Kegel) exercises, to tone the pelvic muscles. Strong pelvic muscles are essential for maintaining an erection, and also for increasing sensation during orgasm.

Follow all these suggestions, and you'll be certain to get stronger erections.
