Pregnancy Blues

The news of being pregnant brings a lot of joy and happiness. But, with it comes a lot many problems as well. Out of which, Insomnia–the problem of not being able to get into sleep at night–is very common among women who are pregnant. Most of the pregnant women find it really difficult to fall asleep in the latter stages of their pregnancy because of insomnia. This comes along with a lot of other common problems or symptoms of pregnancy like frequent urination, morning sickness, restless mind, and cramps in legs and difficulty in getting into comfortable position. All this makes a pregnant women very tired and give a feeling that she will be pregnant forever. But, the good thing is that by following a few simple strategies, the pregnant women can overcome the problem of insomnia.

The basic and important thing to do during pregnancy is to relax a lot and sleep a lot. Relaxation reduces stress and anxiety, and helps in getting sound sleep which is required for the pregnant women and her growing baby. The thoughts of labor pain and delivery are the main cause of anxiety during pregnancy. These thoughts or any other thoughts should be avoided as much as possible. There are step of things to be done to relax the mind and body during pregnancy. These include, doing yoga and meditation which is the best way to cool the senses and releasing the stress and anxiety, taking a warm bath and having a glass of warm milk mixed with honey before retiring to bed. And other things to be taken care of include making the bedroom comfortable enough to easily fall asleep. The windows of the bedroom should be covered with dark curtains so that the room remains dark and the temperature should be set to a comfort level. These things help the pregnant women fall fast asleep during her pregnancy.

A pregnant woman finds it really difficult to get into comfortable position because of insomnia. She should help herself to comfortable position by putting a body pillow or pregnant pillow under her body and she should also support her abdomen with a pillow underneath. Then she should place a pillow between her legs to support her uterus while sleeping. A pregnant woman can avoid the problem of frequent urination at nights by drinking as much of liquid as possible during early daytime and drinking less liquid before going to bed. Other problem the pregnant women face during pregnancy is difficulty in changing sides in bed. Wearing silk pajamas should help pregnant women turn from one to another easily in bed. Work and thoughts of work should be kept away from the bed side. Noise maker aid or sound machine should be used to tune out the distracting sounds and help the pregnant women fall fast asleep. Listening to soft and gentle music and taking a foot massage should also help the pregnant women fall asleep quickly. Following these steps and having a routine bedtime should help pregnant women keep insomnia at bay and help getting sound sleep and having a happy pregnancy.
