Signs and Symptoms of Early Pregnancy

A little less than half of pregnant women experience some or all of the below signs and symptoms of pregnancy as early as 5 weeks. Nearly all women will experience some of the below signs and symptoms by 8 weeks. Remember it is possible to not experience any of these symptoms and still be pregnant!

  • Missed period
  • Some home pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy as early as the first day of your missed period, although a false test does not necessarily mean you are not pregnant. There is also a chance that it may just be too soon! For optimal results with the highest degree of accuracy, the best time to take a pregnancy test is one week after the first day of your last missed period.
  • The majority of providers start seeing their pregnant clients at around 8 weeks. At that appointment it is likely that you will have your urine checked again to confirm your pregnancy. This may seem redundant but it is very standard and offers peace of mind to confirm that you are pregnant.
  • It is very likely that your provider will not be able to hear, or even attempt to listen to baby’s heart beat until you are 12 weeks pregnant. This is completely normal. About the time that your uterus begins popping above the pubic bone this is when you know you are ready for this exciting stage! To see more relevant information about pregnancy milestones week by week there are many great resources available with full explanations and week by week assessments of what to expect.
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Breast tenderness and/or growing / enlarged breasts
  • Feeling an increased sensation of having to urinate more often (however this should not be accompanied by painful urination. If you are experiencing painful urination you need to contact your health care provider.)
  • Increased fatigue or feeling extra tired
  • Heartburn is a common symptom
  • Feeling stuffy or experiencing nasal congestion
  • Feeling emotional or moody

Remember, it can be normal to not have any of these signs or symptoms and still be pregnant! If you suspect that you could be pregnant but continue to have negative pregnancy tests, please consult your health care provider (HCP).

Some home pregnancy tests are more sensitive than others and are not always perfect, there is a possibility for false positives and false negatives, remember to consult your health care provider with any questions or concerns.
